Birth Registry

Registering Your Newborn

Every child born in Demohausen must be registered with the civil registry office within seven days of birth. If your child was born in a hospital, the hospital administration often handles the preliminary notification for you. However, you must still visit us to collect the official certificates and verify the spelling of the name. For home births, the parents are responsible for bringing the midwife’s confirmation and their own identification documents to our office personally. This registration is vital for applying for child benefits and health insurance coverage.

Paternity & Custody

If the parents are not married at the time of birth, the father must officially acknowledge paternity to be listed on the birth certificate. This acknowledgment can be done at the registry office or the youth welfare office, and we highly recommend doing this even before the child is born to simplify the paperwork later. Along with paternity, unmarried couples can also declare joint custody. If no declaration is made, the mother usually retains sole custody. We advise handling these legal matters early in the pregnancy to ensure a stress-free experience after the baby arrives.

Name Declarations

Choosing a name is a personal decision, but it must comply with local naming laws to ensure the child’s welfare. If the parents have different surnames, they must declare which surname the child will carry. This declaration must be made within one month of the birth. For international couples, the naming laws of the other country may apply. In such cases, we offer a specialized consultation to determine the best legal option for your child’s passport and dual citizenship status.
